How it works

Courses teach you chapters. This teaches you the words you will meet today, keeps them with spaced repetition, and asks you to produce them rather than recognise them.

  1. 1

    Frequency first

Words arrive in the order a real corpus says you will meet them, not in the order a syllabus finds convenient. The commonest few thousand carry most of what anyone says to you.

  2. 2

    Produce, don't recognise

Recognising a word in a list is not knowing it. Every word is worked until you can produce it in a sentence — and the app decides how hard to push from how you have actually done, never from a button you press.

  3. 3

    Spaced, and honest about it

Scheduling is FSRS, tuned for retention rather than for a streak. A word counts as yours after three weeks without being forgotten, so the number on your screen is one you cannot fake.

Going somewhere?

A trip is the best reason to start and the worst reason to open a textbook. Tell it where you are going and it puts the words you will need in front of the ones you will not — then keeps them until you land.

What it costs

One language, three, all of them — or just the travel booklet. There is a free tier that gives you a word a day and keeps every word it taught you, and 14 days of the full thing to try first, without a card.
